“What are you doing with him?”

One of the greatest compliments Jesus received on earth was meant to be an insult. “Jesus is a friend of sinners.” In most social circles, you are judged by who you are with, where you came from or what you have. If you say you are from Chicago, people will think you like the bears, enjoy cold winters and eat deep dish pizza every night. One of the reasons Jesus offended so many people was because of his followers. Jesus regularly hung out with sinners. 2000 years later, we can see that God was creating a new community, one built on grace. Jesus didn’t mind hanging out with sinners, because it was with them that he found the warmest reception. This week we are studying Matthew 9, the calling of Levi (Matthew) as a study on Christian community.
