CloseJesus’ prayer in John 17 is a remarkable expression of both God’s tremendous love for the church and God’s tremendous love for the world. The world is a risky place for followers of Jesus – and one from which they need to be protected. In a particular way, the danger of the world is one of division. The world can separate and isolate followers of Jesus – and Jesus’ prayer is that this would not happen. Instead, Jesus envisions the kind of communion/unity amongst God’s people that is an expression of – and bears witness to – the love that the Father has for the Son. In an isolating and dividing world, we are welcomed into the possibility that we can experience God’s love through one another, and when we do that, it shines light on Jesus. Acts 6 gives one example of the way that the world’s dividing pressure is overcome through real practices of love and sharing – and the ways that the unity Jesus prays for helps the Christian church grow.
