The Two Halves of Discipleship

We like to think that the spiritual journey is all about moving forward—about effort, discipline, and getting stronger with each step. But what if true spiritual maturity isn’t just about what you do for God, but about how you allow God to shape you—especially through the things you can’t control? John 21 closes with a surprising conversation between Jesus and Peter. After years of passionate, often impulsive faith, Peter finds himself confronted with a new reality: the journey ahead won’t always look like the journey behind. Jesus describes a shift from action to surrender, from leading to being led. This story isn’t just about Peter. It’s about all of us. The path of following Jesus includes both seasons of building and seasons of letting go—times when we move in faith, and times when we’re asked to trust God in places we never expected to be.

From Series: "Jesus (Mis)Understood"

People frequently misunderstand Jesus. It was that way during his ministry and it is still the case today. Throughout the gospel of John we find stories in which almost everyone (experts, leaders, family, disciples) misunderstand what Jesus is doing and saying. Often it wasn’t until after Jesus’s death and resurrection that they finally understood. This month we want to help you understand who Jesus is and what he did by looking at 10 misunderstandings in John. Using the benefits of the full story, we will discover the power of Understanding Jesus. This week we will study Jesus’s first trip to the temple, an event filled with high tension and interesting insight.
